Would you like to take a walk in nature, but would rather not go alone?

Join the "Walkers' Club" at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Tuesday mornings, 9:30 to 10:30 am.

Participants will gather at the Visitor Center and choose which trail they will walk that morning. This is an opportunity to walk with others and make new friends. These walks are not guided or led by staff. Walkers' Club is a free activity.

How do YOU think we can protect nature for the future? Join the conservation conversation. Our meetings will start with a short hike or activity and end with a discussion about the week’s topic. Participants will receive a free Conservationist for Kids magazine that will be used as a guide for our conversation. Parent(s) and child(ren) must accompany each other. This program is designed for children in grades 2–8

DEC is developing a new plan for inland trout stream management based on updated scientific information and the desires expressed by trout anglers. Prior to completing the draft plan, DEC fisheries managers would like to meet with trout stream anglers to explain the proposed approach, answer questions, and solicit feedback.

Ten public meetings around the State are scheduled between October 1st and November 12th to facilitate these discussions.

Join the Western Finger Lakes ReLeaf Committee for a Pruning Workshop with Guy Meilleur of Historic Tree Care and the Veteran Tree Network. Registration begins at 7:30 AM, program starts promptly at 8 AM, and ends at 3:30 PM and will be at the Rochester Academy of Medicine at 1441 East Ave. Rochester NY 14610

This comprehensive and in-depth full-day workshop will provide pruning training for green industry professionals and municipal employees. The morning will cover National and International tree pruning standards. Structural pruning from Pediatrics to Geriatrics, as well as Storm Damage and Hollow Tree Regeneration. Outside we will inspect and assess trees and develop specifications together. The afternoon will cover the most recent A300 and BMP updates to pruning in the industry as well as additional outdoor pruning presentations. This presentation has recently been given by Guy in both Germany and Estonia.

HOMESTEAD CRAFTS

We will be heading outdoors to learn about wildflowers, mushrooms, grasses and trees/nuts that grow at Five Rivers. On our walk, we’ll discuss life cycles, ecosystem niches, and importance or use to homesteaders. We will collect a few samples and head indoors to create a keepsake. Not into crafting? Feel free to leave after the walk. Participants are asked to dress for the weather and bring along water and a snack.

Please meet at Five Rivers’ Guided School Program Building.

Time & Dates: Thursdays, 1:30–3:00 PM, September 26, October 3, 10, 17, and 24

This event is arranged by the I FISH NY program of the DEC in cooperation with the Hempstead Lake State Park. Attendees will learn fish identification, local aquatic ecology, casting safety and techniques and fishing regulations. Following an educational introduction about fishing on Long Island, I FISH NY will conduct basic fishing instruction, ecology and stewardship of local aquatic habitats, fish identification, regulations and casting safety and techniques. The I FISH NY program of the DEC will provide instruction, rods and bait free of charge.

How to Do It: BIRD FEEDING BASICS

If you enjoy observing birds, why not bring the birds to you? Join us at Five Rivers’ bird observation area inside the visitor center to learn how to attract birds to your home. We’ll discuss bird feeders, water features, and seed and other food sources. A demonstration of aids for seeing and hearing birds, and suggestions for recording observations will add to your enjoyment of bird feeding.
