 2013-14 Deer Management Permit Application Period Starts

Deer Management Permit (DMP) applications for the 2013-14 deer hunting seasons are now being accepted. You can apply online, by phone or in person at a license issuing agent (most sporting goods stores, DEC offices or town clerks). There is a $10 non-refundable application fee, except for holders of lifetime sportsman licenses purchased prior to 9/30/2009, and for junior hunters and junior bowhunters. Applications are due by October 1, 2013. With a DMP, hunters may take one antlerless deer in addition to deer taken with appropriate tags during the firearm, bow or muzzleloader seasons.

New York State 2013-2014 hunting, trapping and freshwater fishing licenses are now available for purchase online, by phone or in person at license issuing agents. Visit DEC's Buy a Sporting License webpage to purchase yours today. Licenses are valid beginning October 1, 2013 through August 31, 2014.


 Public comment ends: Draft gen'l permits for stream crossing for timber harvest

Two draft general permits are open for comment. Both concern the placement, construction, maintenance and removal of temporary stream crossings for the purposes of timber harvesting only.

DEC is providing Preliminary Drafts for Public Consideration of revised Petroleum Bulk Storage (PBS) and Chemical Bulk Storage (CBS) regulations for comment by stakeholders.

To help the public understand the draft regulations and ask questions, DEC will be hosting a live webinar about the draft regulations on August 14, 2013, from 10:00am - 12:00pm. You can access the webinar with your computer -- click the web link above for details.

DEC also will host a public information meeting about the draft regulations on September 10, 2013, from 10:00am - 12:00pm in Albany.

Public comments are welcome at the sessions and during a public comment period that runs through September 20, 2013. Comments should be emailed to the email address identified above labelled "Contact".

DEC, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and New York Sea Grant will host a public forum about environmental issues affecting Lake Ontario and the work being done under the Lakewide Action and Management Plan (LAMP).

The forum will be held at the Port of Rochester Terminal Building, 1000 North River Street, Rochester, NY 14612.

At the forum, scientists and managers will give presentations on water quality in Lake Ontario, the quality of Lake Ontario beaches, the lake's food web, restoration of native fish species, research on toxic contaminants in fish, and monitoring and restoration of the lake's coastal wetlands.

The forum will not address Lake Ontario water level regulation. The International Joint Commission is conducting separate events this summer to discuss water level regulation.

A second public forum will be held on August 22 in Oswego, NY and is posted separately on DEC's Events Calendar.

 Wetlands open for recreation on 3 Wildlife Management Areas

The public will have a special opportunity to visit restricted portions of three Wildlife Management Areas in Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties starting Saturday, Aug. 17 and continuing through Friday, Aug. 30. Perch River WMA in Jefferson County and Upper and Lower Lakes and Wilson Hill WMAs in St. Lawrence County, including their wetland restricted areas, will be open to visitors.
