Note extension of public comment period: DEC is encouraging public comment through March 29, 2013 on a renewed draft State Hazardous Waste Management Permit for CWM Chemical Services, LLC's facility at Model City, New York.

As part of that effort, DEC has scheduled a legislative public hearing to be conducted in two sessions at the Lewiston-Porter High School located at 4061 Creek Road in Youngstown, New York. The first session will begin at 5:00 p.m., and the second session will begin at 7:00 p.m.

DEC also will conduct an availability session from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. at the same location.

In the event that the High School is closed for the day or closes early due to inclement weather on January 14, 2013, the hearing and availability session will be held on January 16, 2013 at the same times.

Want to get out of the house with your young child? Join our fun series just for them! Each hour-long session will feature a variety of activities, such as stories, games, crafts and snacks. Participants must register for the entire series. For children ages 3 to 5. Materials fee = $20.00 per child; $10.00 per child for Friends of Reinstein members. The public is invited to the meeting to learn about remedies being proposed for sites within the Environmental Restoration Program as follows:

- Former Tru-Stitch Slipper Factory Site (Bombay) - "no further action remedy" proposed

- Former Tru-Stitch Slipper Warehouses Site (Bombay) - "no action remedy" proposed

Public comments also are welcome at the meeting, and during public comment periods that run through February 21, 2013.

Cross-country skiers and snowshoers will be able to visit both the Gate Lodge and Main Lodge of Camp Santanoni, view displays about the Great Camp and take interpretive tours with Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) staff.  The Artist’s Studio, a stone building near the main lodge on the shores of Newcomb Lake, will be open as a warming hut. Coffee, tea and hot chocolate will be available and the public is asked to bring their own cups. Also, the Adirondack Interpretive Center will provide snowshoes to lend to visitors at the Gate Lodge.

DEC's Camp Santanoni is located in the town of Newcomb, Essex County in the heart of the Adirondacks. Directions can be obtained from Adirondack Architectural Heritage (518-834-9328), Adirondack Interpretive Center (518-582-2000) or the town of Newcomb (518-582-3211).

This part of New York State is home to six species of the squirrel family, including two flying squirrel species. Learn about these animals and about squirrels around the world during an indoor presentation. Then join us outside for an interpretive walk to look for tracks and traces of our local squirrel species.
