DEC has filed a Notice of Emergency Adoption and Proposed Rule Making to amend 6 NYCRR Part 40 pertaining to the recreational harvest of summer flounder. This rule making will increase the minimum size and decrease the possession limit. The open season remains unchanged.

The emergency rule went into effect on May 10, 2017 and will expire on August 7, 2017. NYS DEC is seeking to adopt this rule making permanently.

Written comments on the proposed rule making will be accepted until close of business July 17, 2017. For questions or to submit comments please send to the contact listed above.

DEC invites the public to comment about a proposal for no further action related to the Ithaca Falls Overlook Site (Ithaca, Tompkins Co.), within New York's Environmental Restoration Program. Public comments about the proposal will be accepted through July 17, 2017.

A public meeting also will be held: June 20, 2017 at 6:30 PM at: City of Ithaca, City Hall – Common Council Chambers, 3rd Floor, 108 E. Green Street, Ithaca, NY 14850.

Take Long Island Expressway (LIE, I-495) to exit 62 (Nicolls Road/County Route 97). Go North on Nicolls Road for about 9 miles. After crossing Route 347 take a left at the 2nd traffic light (South Entrance of Stony Brook University's Campus) onto South Drive. At the next light, turn right onto Marburger Drive. Less than 1000' turn right into Marine & Atmospheric Sciences entrance and immediately bear right. Follow the road to the School of Marine & Atmospheric Sciences and Endeavour Hall. You may park in the lot in front of the building.

Each summer, the Friends of Five Rivers offer outdoor programs to help parents and children grow in their understanding and appreciation of the natural world through shared activities. Parents or caregivers and children must participate together. Registration is required.

Summer Evenings Together 1 (Birds and Bird Watching) takes place over four evenings: July 18, 20, 25 and 27. Learn about birds and observing birds through hands-on activities.

Also see Summer Evenings Together 2 (Family Game Night), offered as two different one-evening sessions: July 11 and August 18. Play large-group nature games with other participating families and learn about the lives of animals.

Citizen Science: Monarch Larva Monitoring Project (MLMP)

Take part in ongoing research on monarch butterflies. For more than 15 years, data collected at Five Rivers has been contributed to this continent-wide citizen science project conducted through the University of Minnesota. The goal of the MLMP is to better understand how and why monarch populations vary, with a focus on their distribution and abundance during the breeding season in North America. Volunteers in the United States, Canada and Mexico aid in conserving monarchs and advance understanding of butterfly ecology and migration in general. Meet at the Nature’s Accessible Backyard Trail kiosk, at the south end of our parking lot. Go to www.mlmp.org to learn about the project.

The Town of Islip is co-sponsoring this free fishing clinic with DEC. This clinic is geared towards families, but it is open to all. The clinic will focus on fishing techniques, biology and stewardship.

DEC proposed a major reorganization and revision of New York State's solid waste management regulations. DEC received 235 formal written comments, and approximately 5,000 form letters and e-mails during the 180 day public comment period, as well as hundreds of additional comments during the public hearings. The revisions to the regulations address the comments received during the comment period and provide additional clarification on many technical issues.

The public is invited to submit written comments on the revised proposed amendments to Part 360 and the revised Draft GEIS until 5:00 p.m. on July 21, 2017.

Written comments can be submitted as follows:
