The NYS DEC Division of Lands and Forests is filing a Notice of Proposed Rule Making to repeal 6 NYCRR §192.7, Control of the Emerald Ash Borer. The proposed action will repeal regulations that restrict the movement of ash wood in New York State.

There will be a 60 day public comment period on the proposed rule. Comments will be accepted through June 25th, 2018.

The Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Council (Council) and the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission (ASMFC) have scheduled several scoping hearings to gather public input on the range of issues and information to be considered in a new amendment to the Bluefish Fishery Management Plan. This amendment, the Bluefish Allocation Amendment will review and possibly revise the allocation of Atlantic bluefish between the commercial and recreational fisheries and the commercial allocations to the states.

Some of the topics the Council and Commission are interested in receiving comment on include the following:

  • Sector based bluefish allocations
  • Commercial allocations to the states
  • Transfer processes
  • Changes in the fishery
  • Changes in availability, effort, and marketability

A scoping hearing is scheduled in New York on June 26, 2018 at 6:30 PM.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) has completed a Draft Unit Management Plan amendment for the High Peaks Wilderness Complex. The amendment includes a River Area Management Plan, pursuant to 6 NYCRR section 666.7, for the Opalescent River.

Written comments are welcome and will be accepted, by mail or e-mail, by the contact person listed below until June 27, 2018.

Copies of the draft UMP amendment will also be available on CD at the following locations: NYS DEC - Headquarters in Albany, NY (5th floor); NYS DEC - Region 5 Office in Ray Brook, NY and NYS DEC - Region 5 Sub Office in Warrensburg, NY.

Take part in ongoing research on monarch butterflies. For more than 15 years, data collected at Five Rivers has been contributed to this continent-wide citizen science project conducted through the University of Minnesota. The goal of the MLMP is to better understand how and why monarch populations vary, with a focus on their distribution and abundance during the breeding season in North America. Volunteers in the United States, Canada and Mexico aid in conserving monarchs and advance understanding of butterfly ecology and migration in general. Meet at the Nature’s Accessible Backyard Trail kiosk, at the south end of our parking lot. Go to www.mlmp.org to learn about the project.

The Town of Islip is co-sponsoring this free fishing clinic with DEC. This clinic is geared towards families, but it is open to all. The clinic will focus on fishing techniques, biology and stewardship.

Our New York State Bird, the eastern bluebird, is recovering, thanks to the bluebird nest box program. Learn more about this beautiful bird and its amazing recovery in this presentation on bluebirds and other nest box inhabitants. Citizen Science: TURKEYS

Turkeys have made an amazing recovery in New York State but recent surveys suggest that their populations have begun to decline. The reasons for this decline are not fully understood, so the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is conducting a Summer Wild Turkey Sighting Survey. We hope that this data will help us understand the reasons for the decline. Join us for this 45-minute indoor program to learn more about wild turkeys and how you can help participate in this survey.
