Proposed Rulemaking to Amend Water Quality Standards Regulations and the Classification of Upper and Lower New York Bay

The purpose of the proposed rulemaking is to amend Parts 700, 703, and 890 of Title 6 of the Official Compilation of Codes, Rules, and Regulations of the State of New York (6 NYCRR) to adopt new standards for enterococci and E. coli to meet the requirements of federal law and to upgrade the classifications of certain surface waters in the New York Harbor.

DEC invites the public to the meeting to learn about a proposed upcoming expedited cleanup of a portion of the Former Sperry Remington Property - North Portion, otherwise known as the Elmira High School, located at 777 South Main Street, Elmira, Chemung County.

Details will be presented about soil cleanup activities to be completed prior to the Elmira City School District replacement of the parking lot and bus loop for the school this summer.

Citizen Science: EARLY BIRDERS 

Thursdays May 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31 at 7:30 AM

Come celebrate the dawn chorus as we monitor the progression of spring bird migration. These outdoor surveys begin at 7:30 AM. Meet at the bird-viewing window in the visitor center. After a brief introduction, we’ll head out on the trails. Beginners are always welcome. Binoculars are helpful but not necessary. In case of inclement weather, these programs will be canceled. NOTE: Organized groups (scouts, schools, hiking clubs, etc.) are welcome, but are asked to call Five Rivers at 518-475-0291 to register.

 Join us after school to get some fresh air, stretch your legs, and have fun outdoors. We’ll meet in front of the visitor center to head out on an adventure. Each week will have a different theme and will include time to explore. Come for as many sessions as you’d like, and dress for outdoor activity. For children in grades K-5 and their caregivers.

Project 1:
Time: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Help Chautauqua County Equestrian Trails by tidying up the horse trails for spring. This will include raking and picking up sticks and debris on the trail. Tidying up the parking area of garbage and debris. All ages welcome. Please bring garden gloves, water, pruner shears, rakes and a snack.
Project 2:
Time: 12:30 PM - 3:30 PM
Volunteers for this project will be assisting the Cherry Creek Sno Goers snowmobile club with fixing a portion of wet snowmobile trail with geocloth and gravel materials. Volunteers will help shovel and rake out gravel on the trail surface. All ages welcome. Please bring garden gloves, water, snack, shovel, and garden rake.
Project 3:
Time: 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
Help the Boutwell Hill Ski Club tidy up their trails and perform general trail maintenance. All ages welcome. Please bring garden gloves, water, pruner shears, rakes and a snack.

We can accommodate: Large Groups, Small Groups, College student groups, Boy or Girl Scouts

Show New York State Lands Some Love!
Volunteers from across the state participate in cleanup, improvement, and beautification events at New York State parks and historic sites each year on the first Saturday in May. Keep the Earth Day spirit alive by caring for Reinstein Woods' trails on I Love My Park Day. Volunteers will help rake trails and line them with logs, trim back or remove invasive plants, and pick up trash. We may also plant some native seedlings. All ages welcome. Scout groups and other organizations welcome. Refreshments provided. Registration required; call 716-683-5959 to sign up.

I LOVE MY PARK DAY

I Love My Park Day is an annual event that brings together thousands of volunteers to celebrate and enhance New York's parks, historic sites, and public lands. Five Rivers Environmental Education Center has 10 miles of trails used for passive recreation, environmental education, and wildlife viewing. Projects will include trail clean-up, light maintenance, tree planting and invasive species removal. All ages welcome.

Join us for a fulfilling day where participants can beautify Twin Lakes Preserve through litter pickup and educate fellow park goers by posting fishing information signs. All ages welcome. Please bring garden gloves, water, snack, rake, shovel, hand clippers or loppers, and please wear boots.

Project 1: Branch and limb pick up along the Overland trail. This may include clipping some branches hanging in the trail.

Project 2: Clipping and lopping on the closest 3 loops to the parking area.

Project 3: We have a few other projects that include some clearing of trails and common areas that could be made more desirable.
