Would you like to take a walk in nature, but would rather not go alone?

Join the "Walkers' Club" at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Tuesday mornings, 10:30 to 11:30 am.

Participants will gather at the Visitor Center and choose which trail they will walk that morning. This is an opportunity to walk with others and make new friends. These walks are not guided or led by staff. Walkers' Club is a free activity.

This public meeting has been canceled. The public comment period is still on and goes until April 15, 2020.

A Draft Unit Management Plan (UMP) for the Beaverkill Campground located in Sullivan County is now available for public review. The public is invited to submit input on the draft plan, which will guide future management of the campground over the next 10 years.

A public meeting is scheduled to provide information about the proposed amendment and to get input from the public on March 24, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at:

Rockland Town Hall, 95 Main Street, Livingston Manor, New York 12758

The meeting will provide an opportunity for people to learn more about the proposed management actions in the draft plan and to comment on the proposals. Following a short presentation, DEC staff will be available to answer questions and accept public comments. The meeting facility is wheelchair accessible. Please call (845) 256-3018 at least two weeks in advance of the meeting with specific accommodation requests.

In addition, the public can visit the Beaverkill Campground Survey to share comments on recreational opportunities. Survey Responses will be accepted until April 15, 2020.

The draft plan for the Beaverkill Campground can be viewed and downloaded at DEC's website. Copies are also available in electronic format on compact disc and may be requested by calling (518) 457-2500.

All comments on the Draft Beaverkill Campground UMP must be received by April 15, 2020. DEC will review these comments as it finalizes the UMP for the Beaverkill Campground. Notice is hereby given that the Stony Brook University Hospital (EPA Identification Number NYR000161471) has applied to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) under the provisions of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) and 6NYCRR Part 373-3 for closure of a hazardous waste storage unit at the Hospital Main Operating Room, Soiled Utility Room (Hospital, Level 4, Room 625). NYS DEC has tentatively determined that the closure plan is consistent with the regulatory requirements for the closure of a hazardous waste container storage area and, as such, can be approved. The intention of this public notice is to solicit comment from the public on the closure plan. The applicant's closure plan details the steps that will be taken to close the hazardous waste management unit.

A copy of the closure plan is available for public review at NYS DEC - Region 1 Office. The morning will be devoted to several presentations on environmental education and volunteers, urban soils, and a discussion of the Play Fair initiative and its impact on the City’s tree budget.

The afternoon will provide a choice of tours of urban forestry sites on Staten Island.

MAPLE SUGAR OPEN HOUSES

Saturdays, March 7, 14, 21 & 28
 1:30 to 3:30 PM
Join us for an introduction to maple sugaring, from tap and sap to syrup. You’ll get to twirl a brace and bit, pound a spile, inspect the sap flow, enjoy the aroma of sap boiling in our evaporator, and take the maple syrup taste test challenge. A local maple producer will be on site to answer questions and offer a variety of maple products for sale. Organized groups, please call to register.

NOTE: Organized groups (scouts, schools, hiking clubs, etc.) are welcome, but are asked to call Five Rivers at 518-475-0291 to register.
