Would you like to take a walk in nature, but would rather not go alone?

Join the "Walkers' Club" at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Tuesday mornings, 10:30 to 11:30 am.

Participants will gather at the Visitor Center and choose which trail they will walk that morning. This is an opportunity to walk with others and make new friends. These walks are not guided or led by staff. Walkers' Club is a free activity.

 Public Workshop - Hazardous Waste Revisions Being Considered: Generator Rule

DEC is holding public workshops on the hazardous waste revisions that DEC is considering, including the Generator Improvements Rule, state-initiated changes regarding secondary containment requirements and the creation of uniform LQG requirements, and the Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals Rule. 

During this workshop staff will talk about the revisions to the hazardous waste regulations that DEC is considering, including an in-depth discussion of EPA's Generator Improvements Rule. This discussion will also focus on state-initiated changes including expanded secondary containment requirements for the storage of liquid hazardous waste and the creation of uniform large quantity generator (LQG) requirements that would apply statewide. DEC would like to encourage stakeholders to attend and provide feedback about these revisions.

PLEASE TAKE NOTICE that pursuant to the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act, that the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation hereby give notice of the first meeting of the Climate Action Council at New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, 625 Broadway, Public Assembly Room 129, Albany, New York 12233 on Tuesday, March 3, 2020, commencing at 1:00 p.m.

For members of the public interested in observing the meeting, pre-registration is not required but is encouraged due to limited seating. Attendees who wish to pre-register should send their name and affiliation to ClimateAct@dec.ny.gov.  Due to building security, all meeting attendees must show identification upon entering the building. This meeting will also be recorded and posted on the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority’s website, https://www.nyserda.ny.gov within three days, as well as on the Climate Action Council website.

Notice is hereby given that the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) filed a Notice of Proposed Rule Making with the New York State Department of State to adopt prohibitions on hydrofluorocarbon substances previously in place at the national level by the USEPA. The goal of this proposed rule is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with the use of hydrofluorocarbons as refrigerants, aerosol propellants, and foam-blowing agents, where safe alternatives are available.

 Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator Exam - Registration Deadline

DEC has a Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator exam scheduled for Thursday, March 12, 2020. The exam will take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the DEC Region 2 office, 47-40 21st Street, Long Island City, NY 11101.

The examination is for individuals seeking a general (commercial) license to provide wildlife removal services. For more information on the Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator License and links to obtain study materials please visit DEC’s website.

Register for the exam by emailing the DEC Region 2 wildlife office at R2.NaturalResources@dec.ny.gov and provide your name, mailing address, phone number, and an email address. If unable to register by email, please call (718) 482-4922 for assistance. There is no fee to take the exam.

Saturdays, March 7, 14, 21 & 28
 1:30 to 3:30 PM
Join us for an introduction to maple sugaring, from tap and sap to syrup. You’ll get to twirl a brace and bit, pound a spile, inspect the sap flow, enjoy the aroma of sap boiling in our evaporator, and take the maple syrup taste test challenge. A local maple producer will be on site to answer questions and offer a variety of maple products for sale. Organized groups, please call to register.

NOTE: Organized groups (scouts, schools, hiking clubs, etc.) are welcome, but are asked to call Five Rivers at 518-475-0291 to register.
