The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) is asking the public for input prior to developing a revision to the Pepperbox Wilderness Unit Management Plan (UMP). The wilderness is comprised of approximately 22,560 acres in in the western Adirondack foothills in the Town of Watson in Lewis County, New York, and the Town of Webb in Herkimer County, New York. The area is scattered with numerous small ponds, streams and wetland systems. 

Written comments are also welcome and will be accepted, by mail or e-mail, by the contact person listed above from February 27, 2019 through April 11, 2019. Additionally, an online survey is available for the public to provide input.

Topic: Building Community Networks through Stewardship

Over the past 12 years, scientists at the USDA Forest Service's New York City Urban Field Station have created and implemented a methodology, known as STEW-MAP, to help understand these stewardship groups and their capacity. This Climate Smart Communities (CSC) webinar will provide an overview on how stewardship strengthens communities' ability to deal with various stressors, share selected case studies of stewardship groups' work in post-disturbance contexts, and will share approaches for identifying and connecting to existing stewardship networks.

Join an interactive, hands-on workshop by NYSDEC and NY Sea Grant that provided K-12 educators with an introduction to the resources and classroom activities included in the Great Lakes Educator Ecosystem Exchange (GLEEE) Basin Bins.

Watchable Wildlife: WOODCOCK WALK

We’ll begin indoors with a brief talk about the American Woodcock and its management at Five Rivers. Then we’ll stroll on the Service Road through managed areas and feeding swales to watch and listen for woodcock. Bring binoculars and a flashlight and dress appropriately for the weather.

NOTE: Organized groups (scouts, schools, hiking clubs, etc.) are welcome, but are asked to call Five Rivers at 518-475-0291 to register.

The hunt is a two-day event that will begin on Saturday, April 13th with an educational portion at 9a.m. The hunting day will be on Saturday, April 20th with the time to be determined.

I Bird NY:  HMBC FIELD OUTING – EARLY MIGRANTS I

Join members of the Hudson-Mohawk Bird Club for a three-mile walk throughout the Five Rivers property. We will explore fields, ponds and marshes, portions of the service road, the Vlomankill corridor, and finish with a loop around Beaver Pond. More than forty bird species can be observed on a favorable day in mid-April. Be prepared for wet trails. Meet at 7:30AM in the parking lot.

Revised Rule Making to Amend Water Quality Standards Regulations and the Classification of Upper and Lower New York Bay

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) proposed a rule making on March 21, 2018 to amend Parts 700, 703, and 890 of Title 6 of the Official Compilation of Codes, Rules, and Regulations of the State of New York (6 NYCRR) to adopt new standards for enterococci and E. coli to meet the requirements of federal law and to upgrade the classifications of certain surface waters in New York Harbor.

Public Comment on the Revised Rule Making

The public comment period commences on February 27, 2019 and is open for 45 days. Written statements may be submitted to NYS DEC - Division of Water, 625 Broadway, 4th Floor, Albany, NY 12233-3500, attention: Michelle Tompkins or by email to BeachRule@dec.ny.gov. Written statements must be submitted to NYS DEC by midnight on April 15, 2019.

NYS DEC is now accepting applications for the 2019 NYS Environmental Excellence Awards program (Press Release). The awards program recognizes businesses, institutions, governments, and organizations for their outstanding commitment to environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and economic viability.

Completed applications must be submitted no later than Wednesday, April 17, 2019. Award winners will be honored at an awards ceremony in November, 2019. At that time, winners will have an opportunity to present and display information about their award-winning project or program.
