Each week a vessel containing natural materials such as furs, skulls, or feathers will be hidden for us to find using hand-held Global Positioning System (GPS) units. Once found, we’ll investigate the item(s) using reference materials to determine who/what it belongs to and how it fits into Five Rivers’ ecosystem. GPS units will be provided. No previous experience is needed. Participants are asked to dress for the weather and bring along water and a snack. Please meet at Five Rivers’ Guided School Program Building.

Citizen Science: Monarch Larva Monitoring Project (MLMP)
Take part in ongoing research on monarch butterflies. For more than 15 years, data collected at Five Rivers has been contributed to this continent-wide citizen science project conducted through the University of Minnesota. The goal of the MLMP is to better understand how and why monarch populations vary, with a focus on their distribution and abundance during the breeding season in North America. Volunteers in the United States, Canada and Mexico aid in conserving monarchs and advance understanding of butterfly ecology and migration in general. Meet at the Nature’s Accessible Backyard Trail kiosk, at the south end of our parking lot. Go to www.mlmp.org to learn about the project.

Join us for an historical tour of Five Rivers. On this walk back in time, Center naturalists will lead an exploration of the many landforms and structures associated with the former Game Farm’s duck and goose propagation program. In the 1930s, the mallard was quite uncommon in the Eastern Flyway. Now, due mostly to the Game Farm program (1933-1970), it is our most common duck species.
Walking distance is about one mile. Please bring drinking water and appropriate footwear.

The annual “Day in the Life of the Hudson River Estuary” gives school classes the opportunity to collect scientific data using hands-on field techniques and provides a snapshot of the river’s ecology on a single day.
