Join us for a family-oriented environmental celebration featuring hands-on educational activities, interactive exhibits, interpretive walks and more. Enjoy first-hand opportunities to meet live hawks, owls, snakes and turtles up close and personal. Meet Smokey Bear, cast for "backyard bass," catch a puppet show and enjoy staffed exhibits from a wide range of local conservation partners...all absolutely free of charge!! There will also be live music from two fabulous local bands, Nisky Dixie Cats and Acoustic Hartland, and sales of refreshments, plants, used books and birdseed. The Hudson River Research Reserve invites the public to celebrate National Estuaries Day and our 30th anniversary at an interactive open house at Norrie Point Environmental Center.

Scientists from the Research Reserve and other organizations will be on hand to answer questions about their work and demonstrate techniques for studying the Hudson. Each presentation will feature a chance to get involved, with demonstrations and activities for young and old alike. Most exhibit areas are wheelchair accessible.

Daily bag limits for ducks are the maximum allowed during the regular duck season, and 2 per day for Canada geese. Young hunters must be accompanied by a licensed (including current HIP registration and duck stamp) adult hunter, but the adult may not shoot any birds unless the respective regular season is open. Note: A 2011-12 hunting license is needed to hunt on any Youth Day in September 2012.

Paddle with staff naturalists and learn about tidal marsh ecology, Hudson River research, and challenges facing estuarine habitats. These FREE educational canoe trips at selected sites along the Hudson River Estuary are provided for the general public.

  • One trip per person, registration required. (register at URL listed above)
  • Novices and families welcome (minimum age is 6, maximum of 2 children under 16 per adult).
  • All gear provided.
  • For safety reasons, we can't allow other boats to join group.
  • Wear old sneakers or water shoes that can get wet/muddy (flip-flops come off!)
  • Prepare to be knee-deep in water.
  • Bring food, water, hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and a sense of adventure!

This workshop helps teachers incorporate study of the Great Lakes into their classroom through standards-based, hands-on lesson plans and in-depth instruction in local Great Lakes issues.
