Outdoor Programs for Preschoolers and Their Caregivers

The Friends of Five Rivers is offering programs at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center for preschoolers (ages 2–4). Children must be accompanied by an adult. Adults and children will explore the natural world together for 90 minutes each week during each multi-week session. Each visit features a storybook on a nature topic, followed by an outdoor activity suggested by the book.

Late Fall Session: November and December

Find complete information, including dates, fees, and how to register here.

WHEN: Each session will take place over 3 weeks. Participants may come either on Tuesday or on Wednesday. (Both days will be identical. Please commit to either Tuesday or Wednesday.) Lessons run from 10:00 to 11:30 am. You may sign up for one or for all four seasonal sessions. Participants will receive an e-mail prior to each week's lesson on the topic that will be explored. The e-mails will be a reminder and a picture clue of that week's adventure.

If you have questions, please feel free to contact Joanne Macklin, Executive Director at (518)475-0295 or email friendsfiverivers@outlook.com .

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) is holding a workshop on the hazardous waste rules and revisions that are being considered for adoption, including the United States Environmental Protection Agency regulations promulgated from 2013 to the present.

To help the public understand the draft regulations and regulatory initiatives, ask questions and provide informal comments, NYS DEC will be hosting a public workshop on December 10, 2019 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. in room PA 129 at 625 Broadway, Albany, NY. Staff will also be available for discussion after the meeting. Those who wish to attend the workshop need to register. Information about the rulemaking and registration details for the workshop are available on the NYS DEC's website under "Outreach Information." If you do not have internet access and would like to attend the workshop, please write to the address below or call (518) 402-8651.

A formal public comment period will be provided at a later date once the regulations are officially proposed. Additional public meetings will also be announced and held in other locations around the state.

Unofficial written comments regarding this regulatory initiative will be accepted by NYS DEC to the contact listed above.

Would you like to take a walk in nature, but would rather not go alone?

Join the "Walkers' Club" at Five Rivers Environmental Education Center on Tuesday mornings, 9:30 to 10:30 am.

Participants will gather at the Visitor Center and choose which trail they will walk that morning. This is an opportunity to walk with others and make new friends. These walks are not guided or led by staff. Walkers' Club is a free activity.

If you would like to be added to our special "Walkers Club" email list to receive updates, email us at FriendsFiveRivers@outlook.com.

This calendar provides a listing of all DEC-sponsored events that are open to the public. You can click on any event in the calendar to view additional details about the event. Note that the events at environmental education centers will only display in the region in which they are located, even though they serve residents from adjacent areas. We welcome people with disabilities to all of our programs. Please call the contact number ahead of time to let us know your specific needs and we will be happy to learn how we can best serve you.
