The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) is seeking public input for the Draft Tioughnioga Unit Management Plan (Draft UMP). The 4,646 acre Unit includes DeRuyter, Morrow Mountain and Stoney Pond State Forests and Nelson Swamp Unique Area located in the Towns of Cazenovia, DeRuyter, Georgetown and Nelson, New York.

Written comments on the Draft UMP are welcome and will be accepted by mail or e-mail until August 15, 2019 to the contact listed above.

Draft McDonough Unit Management Plan

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) is seeking public input for the Draft McDonough Unit Management Plan (Draft UMP). The 13,229 acre Unit includes McDonough, Ludlow Creek and Genegantslet State Forests.

Significant management proposals in the Draft UMP include:

  • the construction of eight new parking areas; 
  • establishment of two routes accessible to people with mobility impairments, totaling 1.5 miles;
  • installation of five new gates to prevent illegal motor vehicle access;
  • the harvest 321 acres of timber each year;
  • removal of interfering vegetation using herbicides;
  • establishment of a 0.2 mile accessible recreational trail to the Ludlow Creek lean-to;
  • and the installation of two new kiosks.

The Draft UMP will cover 3 State forests in the Town of McDonough, Preston and Smithville, Chenango County, New York.

Many people are inspired by Five Rivers, including local artists. During July and August, members of the Bethlehem Art Association will exhibit some of their works related to the site in the visitor center.The exhibit is open during visitor center hours, Monday through Saturday, 9am to 4:30pm; closed Sundays and state holidays.

Meet the artists at a reception from 6:00-8:00 PM on Thursday, July 25.

The NYS Urban and Community Forestry program is pleased to present information sessions in preparation for the Round 15 grant. Funding for urban forestry grants will be available from the Environmental Protection Fund for projects throughout the state.

The application for funding is expected to be available in Fall 2019. Project categories include planting, maintenance, tree inventories, forest management plans and education programs.

To assist potential applicants, information sessions have been scheduled at locations around the state. This information session for Orange County is from 10 AM - Noon on August 15th at the Newburgh City Hall Council Chambers, 83 Broadway, Newburgh NY 12550

The Town of Brookhaven is co-sponsoring this saltwater clinic. As summer winds down, come out and join us for some snapper fishing and crabbing.  Loaner rods and free fishing bait will be provided. This clinic will focus on both snapper fishing & crab fishing techniques, fish biology, and stewardship. Crabbing participants are encouraged to bring an uncooked package of chicken (drumsticks/legs work well), as event supply may be limited. Important items to bring: string, crab net, crab trap, and a bucket. Anglers may certainly bring their own saltwater fishing gear. There will be limited crab traps and nets to borrow if needed.
