As part of Governor Cuomo's NY Open for Fishing and Hunting initiative, June 29-30, 2019 has been designated as a free fishing weekend.

The requirement for a fishing license is waived during this period. This is a great opportunity to try fishing for the first time or for experienced anglers to take friends fishing for the first time.

Some ideas for FREE Fishing Weekend:

  • Try fishing for the first time.
  • Haven't fished in a while? Remember the joy of catching a fish again for free!
  • Become an ambassador to the sport; take a friend fishing for the first time.
  • Invite a friend to New York to fish.
  • Take a spouse or significant other fishing.
  • Take the family fishing...and don't forget the grandparents!

Guided Walk: THE WILD TURKEY TRAIL

This two-mile walk on Wild Turkey Trail features some of the best grassland habitat Five Rivers has. We will walk along Five Rivers’ WHIP (wildlife habitat improvement program) parcel and discuss the management of this grassland. We will observe the species that benefit from all the hard work our staff and volunteers put into maintaining the meadow. This walk then circles through a beautiful hemlock forest before bringing you back to the meadow. If you have them, bring binoculars to observe our grassland species.

NOTE: Organized groups (scouts, schools, hiking clubs, etc.) are welcome, but are asked to call Five Rivers at 518-475-0291 to register.

TURTLE TALK AND WALK

We will begin indoors with a half-hour presentation featuring live turtles. We will then venture outside to walk along the shores of Five Rivers’ ponds to identify species of basking turtles. Along the way, we will also listen for and learn how to identify frogs by their calls. Bring binoculars if you have them.

NOTE: Organized groups (scouts, schools, hiking clubs, etc.) are welcome, but are asked to call Five Rivers at 518-475-0291 to register.
