National Pollinator Week: An Introduction to the Monarch Larva Monitoring Project (MLMP)

Discover how you can participate in this citizen science project involving volunteers in monarch research. The main goal of the MLMP is to better understand how and why monarch populations vary, with a focus on their distribution and abundance during the breeding season in North America. Learn to look for eggs, caterpillars, pupae and adults. Contributions from volunteers aid in conserving monarchs and advance understanding of butterfly ecology and migration in general. Help us to monitor monarchs at Five Rivers, or monitor them at your home. Meet at the Nature’s Accessible Backyard Trail kiosk, at the south end of our parking lot. Go to www.mlmp.org to learn more about the project.

Proposals in the Draft Recreation Management Plan (RMP) include improved access to water locations for persons with disabilities, accessible parking, campsites, and motor vehicle access for persons with disabilities under the CP-3 program. The Draft RMP proposes the construction of nine campsites, water access, and several foot trails. Mountain bikes will be allowed on some of the trails. One lean-to, in addition to the existing one, may be built on the property. Winter recreation on the property will include a cross-country ski trail and ice fishing.

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) will be holding a public meeting on the Draft RMP Thursday, June 22, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at the Long Lake Town Hall, 1204 Main Street, Long Lake, NY 12847.

Comments are welcome and will be accepted by the contact person until July 14, 2017.
