The NYSDEC is sponsoring a free full day workshop on grounds and pest management with alternatives to pesticides at schools and day care centers. Grassroots Environmental will provide introductory training at these workshops on the basic elements of managing grounds and related pest populations for administrators and grounds managers at schools and day care centers. The training will take place at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, 1303 Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage, NY 11804. Massena Town Hall, 60 Main Street, Massena

The meeting will provide information about water quality in the St Lawrence, Grasse, Raquette and St Regis Rivers around Massena. Presentations will be given about the review of plankton studies that had been conducted; studies being conducted by the St Regis Mohawk tribe on the area's fish and wildlife; the Cornwall side of the river; and more to be announced.

Next Wednesday, September 25, the Office of Attorney General Eric T. Schneiderman and the state Department of Environmental Conservation will host a meeting on the Greenpoint Community Environmental Fund ("GCEF") to offer guidance to community members with viable environmental improvement projects. The $19.5 million fund was established with money paid by ExxonMobil in a 2011 settlement with New York State related to a massive oil spill in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The settlement requires the company to fully clean up the spill and pay $19.5 million to fund local environmental benefit projects.
