What better way to commemorate Smokey Bear’s birthday than to try your hand at being a forest ranger? You’ll get to operate an Indian fire pump, see how modern forest ranger trucks are specially equipped for work, and learn fire prevention skills from a real DEC forest ranger. Plus, meet a special guest. Bring a camera. Parent(s) and child(ren) must accompany each other. Please call Five Rivers at 518-475-0291 to register for this program by Wednesday, August 7. This program is free and open to the public.

The public is invited to join in a celebration of the 69th birthday of an environmental icon, Smokey Bear, at Mr. Loretto Unique Area in Staten Island, just east of the intersection of Page Avenue and Hylan Boulevard, across the street from the MIV/CYO building, along the road leading to the bluffs from the parking lot.

Come prepared to get wet! We will walk along the Vlomankill Trail looking for signs of wildlife, then explore the stream to observe life under the water’s surface. We can estimate the water quality of the stream by the presence or absence of indicator species like mayflies and caddisflies. Wear shoes that can get wet—please, no bare feet or flip-flops. Please call Five Rivers at 518-475-0291 to register for this program by Wednesday, August 7. This program is free and open to the public.
