 Educator Workshop: Great Lakes Academy

July 29 through August 2

9:30 AM to 4:00 PM

This inter-disciplinary, five-day training academy will help educators explore ways to infuse their existing curricula with activities and stewardship opportunities connecting their students to the Great Lakes. Topics covered in the academy include water sampling, local plants and animals, geology, history, aquatic invasive species, ecology and habitats, and restoration projects. During the academy, educators will participate in and receive: Science Afloat Program aboard the Spirit of Buffalo to explore the Buffalo River and Lake Erie, Project WET and Project WILD Aquatic curriculum and activity guides, field experiences with ideas and tips for connecting students to the outdoors, and 30 contact hours of professional development. After the academy, all participants will receive at least one free in-class lesson presented by a professional environmental educator, as well as ongoing support to involve students in a stewardship project. Educators who complete the academy and the follow-up activities will receive a $200 stipend. Registration required; call 716-683-5959 to request an application form.

Help be Green in the Great Lakes.  Join us for a free full-day of training about Alternative and Organic Land Care/Pest Management.  Training includes:  pest detection, yard maintenance, selecting well-adapted plants and much more.  Learn how to protect soil, plant health and water resources in NY's 33-county Great Lakes Basin.  Registration required and seating is limited.  Lunch provided.  Location:  Deamen College, Wick Center, 4380 Main Street, Amherst, NY . Five Rivers’ Jones Barn has been in the forefront of recent bat research. Come learn the latest on white-nose syndrome, a disease which has decimated bat populations throughout the Northeast. Learn about some promising new research that might help save bats, then head out with us to count them as they emerge from their roost. This program is free and open to the public.
