Depending on the weather, some of the first signs of spring happen in early March. Join us as we listen for spring peepers, search for pussy willow buds, and maybe see a mourning cloak butterfly. Registration required; call 716-683-5959 to sign up.

The sight of North America’s smallest falcon—the beautiful American kestrel—hovering above a field in its quest for food is exciting. The bad news is that due to loss of agricultural habitat and natural nesting cavities, these sights are becoming less common. The good news is that we can help. Audubon New York and several partners have launched a campaign to build, place and monitor artificial nest boxes. Come learn about kestrels and what you can do on their behalf. The indoor program will be followed by a walk to kestrel habitat and perhaps some observations of kestrels in action.

Boy Scouts are invited to complete the requirements for the Mammal Study Badge. Winter is the perfect time of year to study mammals because their tracks can be easily found in the snow. As one of the badge requirements, Scouts will take part in a conservation project that helps improve habitat for mammals as well as other wildlife. Fee: $7/Scout.

On this easy two mile ramble we will use our senses to witness the awakening of the Norrie Point uplands. Spicebush, skunk cabbage, spring peepers, and maybe a mourning cloak butterfly are just a sampling of the signs of spring that we will see, hear, or even smell.

Join us for a beginner’s outing and see how easy it is to stamp out cabin fever. We will start with an indoor presentation to learn about snowshoes and how to walk and turn in them, then head out on the trails to embrace the sights and sounds of winter. In the event of insufficient snow, the program will be conducted on foot. This program is free of charge, but space is limited. Please call Five Rivers at 518-475-0291 by Wednesday, March 6 to register and reserve snowshoes.
