Cross-country skiers and snowshoers will be able to visit both the Gate Lodge and Main Lodge of Camp Santanoni, view displays about the Great Camp and take interpretive tours with Adirondack Architectural Heritage (AARCH) staff.  The Artist’s Studio, a stone building near the main lodge on the shores of Newcomb Lake, will be open as a warming hut. Coffee, tea and hot chocolate will be available and the public is asked to bring their own cups. Also, the Adirondack Interpretive Center will provide snowshoes to lend to visitors at the Gate Lodge.

DEC's Camp Santanoni is located in the town of Newcomb, Essex County in the heart of the Adirondacks. Directions can be obtained from Adirondack Architectural Heritage (518-834-9328), Adirondack Interpretive Center (518-582-2000) or the town of Newcomb (518-582-3211).

This weekend, birders all across North America will tally birds in their yard or local park as part of the Great Backyard Bird Count. Join us in cooperation with the Audubon Society of the Capital Region as we count the birds at our feeding station, then venture outdoors for a short field practicum. Complete information will be provided on how you, too, can help the National Audubon Society and the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology track from your own yard the mid-winter distribution and abundance of birds.

Snowshoeing is nothing more than exaggerated walking and is excellent aerobic activity to boot. Join us for a beginner’s outing and see how easy it is to stamp out cabin fever. We will start with an indoor presentation to learn about snowshoes and how to walk and turn in them, then head out on the trails to look for signs of wildlife. In the event of insufficient snow, the program will be conducted on foot. This program is free, but space is limited. Please call Five Rivers at 518-475-0291 by Wednesday, February 13 to register and reserve snowshoes.

This calendar provides a listing of all DEC-sponsored events that are open to the public. You can click on any event in the calendar to view additional details about the event. Note that the events at environmental education centers will only display in the region in which they are located, even though they serve residents from adjacent areas. We welcome people with disabilities to all of our programs. Please call the contact number ahead of time to let us know your specific needs and we will be happy to learn how we can best serve you.

We would appreciate receiving feedback from our users. Please let us know if you encounter any difficulties viewing or using this calendar by sending an email to the DEC webmaster.
