Threespine Stickleback

Threespine Stickleback

Gasterosteus aculeatus

Threespine Stickleback lives in the ocean, coastal streams and in landlocked populations in a few large inland lakes. These landlocked areas include Lake Ontario, Saint Lawrence River and Cayuga Lake. It is widespread in Lake Ontario, and the only catch from Cayuga Lake was 1966 so it is considered extirpated. While the records from coastal streams and the Hudson River are as infrequent as ever, it is considered to have declined in marine waters of Long Island.
