Central Mudminnow lives in small streams and ponds, often where near-acidic conditions prevail. It has expanded its range through introductions in the Adirondacks, as it is also non-native to Upper Hudson, Lower Hudson, Mohawk, Susquehanna and Chemung watersheds. Hybridization with Eastern Mudminnow is reported in the Lower Hudson River.
