Grass Carp

artwork by Howard Friedman

Ctenopharyngodon idella

Grass Carp was introduced into New York in the 1980s when it became legal to stock a sterile hybrid to control submerged aquatic vegetation. It tolerates a wide range of environmental conditions and prefers ponds or slack-water areas with dense vegetation. Stocking continues in most parts of the state and there have been no reports of natural reproduction.
