Blueback Herring

Blueback Herring

Alosa aestivalis

Blueback Herring migrates from the ocean into Hudson River tributaries for spawning in late spring. Entry into the Mohawk, Upper Hudson and Champlain watersheds has become possible through locks on canals. Populations in the Mohawk and watersheds of the Great Lakes are sustained by migrants rather than through local recruitment. Its abundance in coastal areas has diminished in recent years leading to reduced numbers in the inland populations as well.
