Finescale Dace inhabits small streams. It is native in eight watersheds including the Allegheny, Upper Hudson and several watersheds in the Saint Lawrence drainage. Its status in the Saint Lawrence, Oswegatchie, Champlain and Upper Hudson watershed is secure. It has declined to below detection in the Allegheny, Ontario and Black watersheds. It is rare in the Raquette watershed and in the southern Adirondack region.
