Blacknose Shiner

Notropis heterolepis

Blacknose shiner occurs in streams with submerged aquatic vegetation and is sometimes scattered among other low gradient areas inhabited by trout. Scattered across about 3/4ths of the state, it seems to be secure in the northern areas or of the Saint Lawrence drainage but has declined in the Genesee, Oswego, Upper Hudson, Mohawk, Allegheny and headwater areas of the Susquehanna and Chemung watersheds.
