Blacknose Shiner occurs in streams with submerged aquatic vegetation and is sometimes scattered among other low gradient areas inhabited by trout. It is native to 14 of 18 watersheds. It seems to be secure in Saint Lawrence, Black, Oswegatchie, Raquette, Champlain, Erie and Ontario watersheds but has declined in the Genesee, Oswego, Upper Hudson, Mohawk, Allegheny and headwater areas of the Susquehanna and Chemung watersheds.
