Blackchin Shiner lives in near shore areas of lakes and streams with ample submerged aquatic vegetation and has reported from 10 of 18 watersheds. It seems secure in the Saint Lawrence, Black, Champlain, Erie and Ontario watersheds but it has declined in headwater areas of the Susquehanna, Genesee, Oswego, Upper Hudson and Allegheny watersheds. It has been classified as a Species of Greatest Conservation Need.
