Frequently Asked Questions about Purchasing Seedlings

The 2013 Seedling Sale will begin on January 2, 2013.

1. How do I place an order for seedlings?

Spring seedling orders for bare root stock are accepted from January through Mid-May. Orders for containerized stock are accepted by phone throughout the summer. (Limited varieties available).

By Phone: (From January through late May) Orders can be placed Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by calling (518) 587-1120. An order will be completed over the phone and sent to you in the mail for your approval and signature. If ordering containerized in June through October - please call 518-581-1439.

By Mail: Print out and complete the order form and send to:

An invoice will be sent to you for your approval, signature, and payment. Customers must return the signed order form in ten (10) days with payment by check or money order to complete the purchase, unless other arrangements have been made. DO NOT SEND CASH. Instructions on how to complete the order are on the invoice.

2. How do I care for my trees and shrubs after planting?

4. How many trees should I order?

Each species has specific site requirements. The area to be planted, spacing, species selection, and the purpose of planting will determine how many trees you should order.

5. What species are offered at the nursery?

6. Are seedlings free?

No, but they are sold at cost. Please refer to the Tree and Shrub Descriptions page which includes the cost per item:

7. Can I split my order between different species?

Conifer species must be ordered in units of 100 or 250, hardwoods must be ordered in units of 25 or 100, and shrubs must be ordered in units of 100 (unless you order the specified "Mixed Species Packets"). For example, if you wish to order Red Maple AND Red Oak, then you must order 25 Red Oak and 25 Red Maple, minimum.

8. What species are best for the area that I am planting?

The Tree and Shrub Descriptions page provides descriptions of each species and the recommended site conditions to achieve optimal growth.

9. When will the trees be available or shipped?

As soon as the frost is out of the ground (usually sometime in mid-April).

10. Can we pay by credit card?

We do not accept credit cards at this time. We only accept checks or money orders, made payable to New York State Department of Environmental Conservation or NYSDEC.

11. How tall are the seedlings?

They typically range 6-14 inches, depending on the species and the year.

12. What does containerized mean?

The seedlings have been grown in plug trays in a greenhouse and are able to be planted all summer through mid fall, since they are not bare root.

13. Do you have bigger sized trees?

We only sell tree and shrub seedlings ranging from 4 to 14 inches tall.

14. Do you sell trees in the fall?

Containerized (plugs) are available until October, as long as we have them in stock.
