Duties/Responsibilities Under the direction of the Database Administration Unit Manager, this position is responsible for administration of the DEC's enterprise Oracle databases. The incumbent must have advanced knowledge of Oracle 11g and is expected to perform a full range of DBA responsibilities with minimal supervision. Frequent interaction with the data modeler and developers is common and the DBA is expected to understand and adhere to agency standards and industry best practices. The DBA will often work with network staff, developers and users when addressing problems. Additional duties include:

Working with the Data Modeler and other project team members, determines user requirements, designs the physical database, creates the database, tests and coordinates changes.

Interacts with development and user personnel to determine application data access requirements, transaction rates, volume analysis, and other pertinent information required to develop and maintain integrated databases. Calculates and establishes physical database parameters.

Establishes security access levels for users or groups of users.

Using available tools, monitors database performance and makes improvements through performance tuning.

Tests and corrects database errors as necessary. Identifies changes that should or must be made to applications or database and communicates these to developers and analysts.

Reviews requested changes to database, analyzes and reports possible affects, and then coordinates agreed upon physical changes to databases.

Reviews scripts and programs for accuracy and efficiency and, if appropriate, corrects the errors.

Works with users and developers to answer questions about the database
Minimum Qualifications

5+ years experience as an Oracle Database Administrator in a UNIX environment, including at least two years experience working with Oracle 10g or 11g, applying Oracle software patches, including Critical Patch Updates or Patch Set Updates, Oracle Enterprise Manager GRID, and writing SQL.

Also requires in-depth knowledge and experience of: database backup and recovery using RMAN; database creation and creation of database objects (tables, indexes, keys, triggers, views); monitoring server performance; database performance tuning based on evaluation of performance statistics (CPU usage, memory usage, disk usage); tuning SQL statements using Explain Plan; Gather Stats; and upgrading a major Oracle release.
