Under the direction of the Unix Admin Unit Manager, the position is responsible for all aspects of Unix/Linux system administration for Agency systems, including but not limited to: product specification, design, installation, configuration, testing, monitoring, performance analysis, and troubleshooting. The position supports critical servers up to the enterprise class level, providing services related to GIS, Database (including Oracle), security (including firewall, proxy, and virus protection), web environment, Java and Cold Fusion development environments, enterprise backup solutions, and financial systems.
Protects DEC's network and data by working in conjunction with the ISO, Data Communications Unit and Network Operations in areas such as DNS, Agency Internet Connections, Firewall, and Virus protection.
Automates processes by writing scripts, scheduled jobs, and configuring machines of all kinds.
Establishes and implements standards for computer operations for compatibility between hardware and software, according to specifications and parameters.
Troubleshoots and resolves software, Unix/Linux operating systems, firewall, proxy, and networking problems.
Schedules, performs, and monitors enterprise-wide backup system and performs data recoveries.
Participates as a team member for projects such as new product evaluations, new server selections, server consolidations, regional distributions of equipment, server virtualization projects, power savings projects, operating system conversions, and implementation of new software.
Schedules, plans, and performs system upgrades, including coordinating the transition from test to production environments.
Creates and maintains work environments used for GIS, Oracle, Java, Cold Fusion, and other types of application development.
Researches vendor solutions and applicable technologies.
Provides technical support for users quickly and efficiently by diagnosing issues and finding solutions in conjunction with the DEC HelpDesk. Many user issues are related to data flow, information exchanges, application environments, and data security. Help to provide individual users and groups with the disk space and software they need to work efficiently.

5+ years of directly applicable Unix/Linux System Management experience, including expert knowledge of Unix/Linux: Operating Systems (emphasis on SUN Solaris and SUSE SLES with OES2), Software, Server Hardware, Tape Libraries, Workstation Hardware, and Server Virtualization.
Also requires in-depth knowledge of: DHCP, DNS, RAID, Backup/Recovery Infrastructure and Design, Check Point Firewall (Hardware and Software), Internet Proxy, ZFS, Virus-Checkers, Solaris-based Java and Cold Fusion environments, Solaris-Based Oracle environments, Novell, Windows, FTP, SSH, HTTP, NIS+, LDAP, SendMail, SNMP, Samba, PERL, Apache, Tomcat, SQL, WebSphere, Active Directory, Arc GIS, ArcGIS Server, Xiotech SAN, Cisco, and Shell Scripting
Travel, overnight travel, and overtime may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required.Must be available for emergency response and after- hours emergencies.
