Region 7 is located in central New York and includes the Salmon River, Onondaga Lake, the shoreline of Lake Ontario, several Finger Lakes, and over 110 State Forests. The main DEC office is located in Syracuse with sub-offices in Cortland, Sherburne and Kirkwood. DEC staff have two main areas of responsibility: natural resource management and environmental quality protection. As part of natural resource management staff oversee state fish and wildlife resources, as well as state forests and wildlife management areas that are located in the region. Equally important are efforts to improve the quality of the environment which includes issuing and monitoring air and water quality permits, cleaning up industrial sites and removing hazardous materials such as tire dumps from the landscape. Please note that construction of a sustainable trail route into and around Tinkers Falls in Labrador Hollow Unique Area is currently being undertaken. Certain access to the upper falls will be closed periodically while the trail is completed. The Accessible Trail into the viewing of the falls will remain open.

Other DEC Offices in the Region
Salmon River Fish Hatchery- The Salmon River Fish Hatchery is located in Altmar, in Oswego County. It specializes in raising steelhead, chinook, salmon, coho salmon, brown trout and landlocked salmon. The hatchery supplies fish for more than 100 public waters including Lake Ontario. Each year the hatchery stocks 3.5 million trout and salmon and 9 million walleye fry.315-298-5051.
