Region 6 Office Directions

Map of DEC Region 6 Western Adirondacks/Eastern Lake OntarioRegion 6 serves Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, Oneida and St. Lawrence counties which include the Western portion of the Adirondacks and the Eastern shore of Lake Ontario. Region 6 has five offices open to the public. The headquarters are in Watertown, with sub-offices in Utica, Lowville, Herkimer and Potsdam. The Cape Vincent Fisheries Research Station is also open to the public, directions to which can be found on the bottom of the page.

From the North via Rt. 37 (Massena, Ogdensburg, Gouverneur)

  • Take Rt. 37 south to Rt. 11 into Watertown
  • In Watertown, Rt. 11 becomes Leray St. then Massey St.)
  • From Massey St. take left on Clinton St
  • Take Clinton St. two blocks to Washington St.
  • State Office Building is across Washington St. on right
  • (Free public parking is available on Clinton St.)

From the North via Route 11 (Potsdam, Canton)

  • Take Rt. 11 south to Watertown
  • In Watertown, Rt. 11 becomes Leray St. then Massey St.
  • From Massey St. take left on Clinton St.
  • Take Clinton St. two blocks to Washington St.
  • State Office Building is across Washington St. on right
  • (Public parking is available on Clinton St.)

From the South via Route I-81 (Syracuse)

  • Take I-81 north to Exit 44 (Watertown Center)
  • Turn Left at stop sign at end of ramp
  • Turn Right onto Rt. 232
  • Turn Left onto Rt. 11 north (about two miles)
  • Rt. 11 north becomes Washington St. Go to 5th stop light
  • State Office Building is on the right
  • (Public parking is available on Clinton St.)

From the South via Route 12 (Utica, Lowville)

  • Take Rt 12. north to Burrville
  • About one mile past Burrville, take left onto Gotham St. at blinking caution light
  • Follow Gotham St. until it ends at Sterling St
  • Turn left on Sterling St., the State Office Building is on your left
  • For Public parking, go through light onto Clinton St.

From the West and East via NYS Thruway (I-90)

  • Take NYS Thruway Exit 31 (Utica)
  • Follow signs for Genesee St. South (Downtown Utica)
  • Cross North Genesee St. bridge
  • Continue south on Genesee St.
  • Look for State Office Building (207 Genesee St.) on the left (directly across the St. from the Radisson)

From the North via State Route 12

  • Take exit for Utica/Whitesboro (stay in center lane)
  • Bear left (Oriskany St.); stay in left-hand lane (Downtown Utica)
  • Go past Utica Memorial Auditorium on left; Utica Police Station on right
  • Follow Oriskany St. to Genesee St. (right-hand turn)
  • Look for State Office Building (207 Genesee St.) on the left

From the South via State Route 12

  • Take Court St. exit
  • Go across Genesee St. (no left turn)
  • Take next left on Union St. to State Office Building

From the West via Route 177 (From NYS Interstate-81)

  • Get off on Exit 42 (Adams Center)
  • Go Right to the light and go straight through onto Rt 177, 25 miles to West Lowville (end of Rt 177) take Rt 12 south 2.6 miles into Lowville to stop light
  • Turn left at light (Rt 812)
  • Turn right at 2nd stop light (by church with clock) cross Railroad tracks
  • Turn left continuing on Rt. 812
  • Continue 1.3 miles to office on left, just past fire tower.

From the North via Route 12 (Watertown)

  • Take Rt 12 south out of Watertown 25 miles into Lowville to stop light.
  • Turn left at light (Rt 812)
  • Turn right at 2nd stop light (by church with clock) cross Railroad tracks
  • Turn left continuing on Rt. 812
  • Continue 1.3 miles to office on left, just past fire tower.

From the North via Route 26 (Fort Drum, Carthage)

  • Take Rt 26 south into Lowville to the first stop light.
  • Turn left at light (Rt. 812)
  • Cross Railroad tracks
  • Continue 1.3 miles to office on left, just past fire tower.

From the East via Route 812 (Gouverneur)

  • Take Rt. 812 south from Gouverneur to Harrisville
  • Rt. 812 follows Rt. 3 a short distance west of Harrisville
  • Make a left on Rt. 812 just before Phil's General store
  • Continue south through Indian River and Croghan and New Bremen
  • The office is located 2.4 miles past New Bremen on the right, just before the fire tower.

From the South via Route 12 (Utica)

  • Take Rt. 12 north from Utica and follow signs to Lowville
  • Rt. 12 merges with Rt. 26 north
  • Follow to 5th stop light next to church with clock
  • Turn right on Rt. 812
  • Cross Railroad tracks, and make a left continuing on Rt. 812.
  • Continue 1.3 miles to office on left, just past fire tower.

From the South via Route 26 and 12D (Rome)

  • Take Rt. 26 and 12D north to Lowville
  • Rt. 26 merges with Rt. 12 north.
  • Follow to 5th stop light next to church with clock.
  • Turn right on Rt 812.
  • Cross Railroad tracks, and make a left continuing on Rt. 812.
  • Continue 1.3 miles to office on left, just past fire tower.

  • Get off at Exit 30 (Herkimer)
  • Turn Right on Mohawk St. - continue until you come to a "T" (South Main and Mohawk St.)
  • Turn Left on South Main St.
  • Cross Route 5 to North Main St. (The office on the left in the second block, across from Johnson's Decorating Center.)

From the North via Route 28S

  • Take Route 28 south into Herkimer until you come to a "T" (Route 28 and Route 5)
  • Turn Right on Route 5 (State St.)
  • At the corner where Cole Muffler is, turn right on North Main St. (The office is on the left in the second block, across from Johnson's Decorating Center.)

From the East via Route 5S

  • Turn right at stop light onto Mohawk St.
  • Continue until you come to a "T" (South Main and Mohawk St.)
  • Left on South Main St.
  • Cross Rt. 5 to North Main St. (The office is on the left in the second block, across from Johnson's Decorating Center.)

From the West via Route 5S

  • Turn left at stop light onto Mohawk St. (follow directions from 5S East)

From the East via Route 5

  • Route 5 turns into State St.
  • Turn right at the corner of North Main and State St. (Cole Muffler is on the corner)
  • The office is on the left in the second block.

From the West via Route 5

  • Rt. 5 turns into State St.
  • Turn left at the corner of North Main and State St. (Just past Burger King)
  • The office is on the left in the second block

Potsdam Office

From the South and West (Watertown, Canton) via Route 11 north

  • Take Rt. 11 north through Canton,
  • The office is 4 miles outside of Canton on the left.

From the North and East (Potsdam) via Route 11 south

  • Take Rt. 11 south through Potsdam,
  • The office is 5 miles outside of Potsdam on the right.

Cape Vincent Fisheries Research Station

Cape Vincent, NY 13618

Cape Vincent is located on the Seaway Trail. From the south, (Watertown) via Route 12F and 12E.

  • Exit Rt. 81, on Coffeen St. Exit 46. Follow Rt.12F to the west,
  • At Paddy Hill turn right, cross the Black River and pick up Route 12E
  • At Stop sign turn left and follow 12E North and Seaway Trail signs to Cape Vincent.
  • Stop at the stop sign in the Cape and turn right onto Broadway.
  • Travel Broadway for 3-1/2 blocks.
  • The facility is located on the river side (left) with a NYS facility sign in front. Offices, aquarium/visitor center is in the stone building directly on the St. Lawrence River.

From the north (Clayton)via 12E.

  • Follow Route 12E south.
  • In Cape Vincent, this route becomes Broadway and the Fisheries Research Station is on the Right.
