Duties/Responsibilities Prepare the technical portions of contractual bidding documents for the installation of electrical systems. In general, these projects involve the rehabilitation or addition to existing electrical systems and new construction. You would prepare plans, specifications, details, estimates and complex electrical designs for various state facilities, and may review consultant design documents to ensure compliance with client standards. Other duties include performing studies for electrical energy conservation and anticipated electrical projects; providing construction support to include checking shop drawings and equipment lists against drawings and specifications prepared by others, and answering questions from bidders, contractors and field staff.

+Minimum Qualifications for Provisional Appointment:

1) Must be a qualified employee of NYS and have one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Junior Engineer and must show proof of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) licensing examination by the time of appointment.
2) Must have a bachelor's degree in mechanical or electrical engineering or mechanical or electrical engineering technology AND one year of engineering experience in the inspection or supervision of mechanical and/or electrical installations in building projects AND must show proof of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering licensing examination (FE) by the time appointment

Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC

Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis.

Transfer Eligible - One year of permanent competitive service at Salary Grade 18 or higher and either:
Eligible for transfer under Section 70.4: Must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications below;
Eligible for transfer under Section 70.1: Permanent competitive service as an Assistant Building Electrical Engineer or Assistant Mechanical Construction Engineer.

55-b/55-c Candidates must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications below and include with their resume or application, a copy of the letter from Civil Service which indicates approval for the 55-b/55-c program.

Open competitive minimum qualifications (provided for 55b/c candidates and 70.4 transfer eligibles): a bachelor's or higher level degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology, AND one year of engineering experience in the design and preparation of layouts for building electrical systems; OR six years of engineering experience in the design and preparation of layouts for building electrical systems. Substitution: College study in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology may be substituted, on a year-for-year basis, for up to four years of the required six years of experience at the rate of 30 credit hours equaling one year of experience.

If there is a viable promotion examination eligible list (three acceptors) for this position, candidates who qualify based on 70.4 transfer or under the 55-b/55-c options cannot be considered.

Additional Comments

Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain. Travel, overtime, and overnight travel may be required.

NOTE: The examination for this title is scheduled to be announced by the NYS Department of Civil Service in January, 2015. Applications to take the examination must be submitted to Civil Service by the deadline stated on the examination announcement. In order to be considered for a permanent appointment, you must apply for and take the examination for this title, and your score must be high enough to qualify you as one of the top three acceptors on the resulting list. If you are not successful on the examination, or your score is not high enough to be reachable for appointment, your employment in this title will not be allowed to continue.
