Minimum Qualifications for provisional appointment:

You must be a qualified employee of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation
and have had one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as follows: Environmental Engineering Technician 2, Senior Drafting Technician (General), Assistant Land Surveyor 2, Electronic Equipment Mechanic, Senior Laboratory Technician, or Cartographic Technician 3.

Eligible for transfer under Section 70.1: Permanent competitive service as a Principal Engineering Technician.

Open competitive minimum qualifications:
  1. six years of qualifying experience;* or
  2. graduation from high school (or possession of an equivalency diploma issued by a recognized educational authority or a USAFI GED diploma - high school level) and three years of qualifying experience;* or
  3. graduation from a high school technical education program in technical aeronautics, technical architectural drafting and building construction, technical chemistry, industrial chemistry, technical electricity/electronics, technical mechanical design and construction, technical structural drafting and design, technical instrumentation and control systems, or computer circuitry, and two years of qualifying experience;* or
  4. sixty college semester credit hours** as described in option 4 above and one year of qualifying experience;* or
  5. a bachelor's degree in engineering technology or engineering.

* For the purposes of these examinations, "Qualifying Experience" is defined as: engineering technician work in aeronautical, chemical, civil, electrical, environmental, mechanical, or sanitary engineering technology; environmental technology; or as a surveyor or a drafter.
** Courses in the social sciences do not meet the specialized credit hour requirement for these examinations.
