Duties/Responsibilities Provide primary oversight of hatchery infrastructure projects across twelve NYS hatcheries. This includes:
  • Establishing effective working relationships with Division of Operations engineers, hatchery managers, and administrative staff;
  • Providing an on the ground presence at hatcheries to monitor project progress and determine future needs;
  • Inspecting hatchery facilities, including manager residences, to ensure that they are being properly maintained;
  • Improving existing hatchery operations manuals, and expanding upon emergency response protocols so that the chance of catastrophic loss of fish stocks is minimized;
  • Developing maintenance schedules for important equipment and infrastructure, such as generators, valves, and pumps, and ensuring that hatcheries adhere to these schedules.
In addition, provide backup support managing fish stock distribution and transfers among NYS hatcheries. This position will directly supervise six hatchery managers.

Minimum Qualifications for Provisional Appointment:
  1. two years as a Fish Culturist 3 or one year as a Fish Culturist 4
  2. one year as a Biologist 1 (Aquatic)
Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC

Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis.
Additional Comments Must have valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to work in remote areas and in adverse weather conditions. Travel and overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required.
