Duties/Responsibilities As a Forester 1, you would perform professional forestry work within the Bureau of Forest Resource Management in such areas as Private Forestry Assistance and Urban and Community Forestry. You would assist private forest landowners, develop forest stewardship plans; evaluate New York Forest Tax law properties, implement forestry cost sharing programs, provide urban and community forestry assistance and outreach and education to homeowners and municipalities, utilize Citrix ArcMap GIS to provide maps as needed and participate in forest health programs. You would assist state forest management and protection activities Region wide when needed . You would participate in conservation and forestry outreach to the general public and communities.

Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis.

or

Transfer Eligible - One year of permanent competitive service at Salary Grade 11 or higher and:
Eligible for transfer under Section 70.4: Must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications below;

or

Eligible for transfer under Section 70.1: Forestry Technician 2 and Forestry Technician 3

55-b/55-c Candidates must meet the open competitive minimum qualifications below and include with their resume or application, a copy of the letter from Civil Service which indicates approval for the 55-b/55-c program.

Open competitive minimum qualifications (provided for 55b/c candidates and 70.4 transfer eligibles):
A bachelor's or higher degree from an SAF Accredited Program in Ecosystem Management, Forestry, Natural Resource Conservation, Natural Resource Management, Natural Resources, or Urban Forestry.
Additional Comments Must have valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Use of personal protection equipment, including a respirator, will be required. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work in remote areas and in adverse weather conditions. Travel and overnight travel may be required. Overtime may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.

Duties/Responsibilities Manage the State Forest Lands in Herkimer and Oneida counties, including: conducting forest inventory; writing Unit Management Plans for State Forest Lands; planning, layout, marking, contract administration, and supervision of forest product sales on State Forest Lands; and supervision of Forest Technician staff who assist with State Forest management. May also assist other Herkimer forestry staff with activities/projects on state forest, private lands, forest preserve and unique area lands. Will be required to negotiate difficult and irregular terrain in an outdoor environment, including areas which are basically trailless. Will be required to work proficiently on a computer, including Microsoft Office suite of software, and ArcGIS software.
