|Duties/Responsibilities||Perform microbiological analyses of 13,000+ water and 300 shellfish (clams, oysters, mussels and scallops) samples collected annually during sanitary surveys in over 1 million acres of certified, conditional and seasonally certified shellfishing areas; prepare media, cultures, reagents, stains, solutions and glassware; employ various pipetting techniques; utilize microscope skills; manage inventory; write standard operating procedures (SOPs); assist in lab examination to detect and quantify fecal coliform bacteria, marine biotoxins and harmful algae, Bacteriophage and Vibrio parahaemolyticus in water, shellfish and related samples used by DEC to properly classify shellfish harvesting areas to protect public health. FDA compliance requires strict recordkeeping; annual participation in two proficiencies; equipment operation, maintenance, repair and calibration; strict aseptic technique when shucking shellfish samples; ability to perform various combinations of serial dilutions; demonstration of program knowledge and skills during FDA laboratory certification evaluations; follow standard operating procedures (SOPs).|

+Minimum Qualifications for Provisional Appointments:
1. Satisfactory Completion of 60 semester credit hours of college coursework which includes at least 18 semester credit hours in biology, chemistry, physics, health science or science technology; OR
Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC
Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis.
Transfer Eligible - One year of permanent competitive service at Salary Grade 7 or higher and either:

|Additional Comments||Must have a valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Travel, overtime, and overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 40 pounds.
