The Biologist 2 (Wildlife) will manage and direct the Wildlife Program in close cooperation with the Natural Resource Supervisor and Central Office Staff. This position conducts wildlife population inventories, monitors contaminant levels and wildlife diseases; develop and implement wildlife management plans; promote appreciation of wildlife in urban environments; review and analyze project proposals which are likely to alter natural wildlife habitats. Included in the position's responsibilities are administrative services and oversight of the Freshwater Wetlands, Game, Non-game and Sportsmen's Education programs. Administrative services include supervision of Wildlife staff, formulation of annual work plans, budget oversight and internal controls. The manager will direct program outreach and communication efforts and coordinate with the citizen's participation specialist when appropriate and interact with Permits, Law Enforcement and Legal.

- Ability to communicate effectively; written and verbal

- Familiarity with Wildlife management principles

- Familiarity with Freshwater Wetlands regulations

- Willing and capable of traveling statewide and working irregular hours for relevant meetings and training

- Effective interpersonal skills

- Have a familiarity with Microsoft and GIS computer programs

+ Minimum Qualifications For Provisional Appointment: Must be an employee of the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation and have one year of permanent competitive or 55-b/55-c service as a Biologist 1 (Aquatic), Biologist 1 (Ecology), Biologist 1 (Marine) or Biologist 1 (Wildlife).

Reassignment - Currently in the title and an employee of DEC

Reinstatement Eligible - Previously held the title on a permanent competitive basis or held a title as indicated under the transfer eligible section on a permanent competitive basis.

Transfer Eligible under Section 70.1 - One year of permanent competitive service as a Biologist 2 (Aquatic), (Ecology), (Marine) or (Wildlife), SG23.

Additional Comments Must have valid driver's license or demonstrate the ability to meet the transportation needs of the position. Must be able to negotiate difficult terrain, work in remote areas and in adverse weather conditions. Travel, overtime and overnight travel may be required. Weekends and holidays may be required. Must be available for emergency response and after-hours emergencies. Must be able to lift and move objects up to 50 pounds.
